Program:
Gerry Fay introduced Diane Slaughter Aaron from the New Haven Youth & Family Services here is Escondido. Diane grew up in Vista, California, is from a military family and spent time in the Philippines. She started at New Haven in August of 2019 and she raises money for 2 non-profits. Today she was focusing on New Haven but said she would be happy to come back and talk to us about N.C. Trade Tech High School. She talked about how just after a couple of months of starting at New Haven, lovey Covid hit the country which made it very challenging for everyone but especially the non-profits who were hid very hard. She says that she feels very blessed to be in this organization and she wakes up every morning knowing that lives are being changed and the community is being positively affected and hope is being given to the young men that are there. New Haven serves 12-19 year-olds, they are surrounded by people who care about them and want to see them succeed.

New Haven has been around for 56 years, it was founded in 1967. New Haven is a community-based service organization that provides residential treatment, education and vocational services as well as clinical intervention for at risk youth and their families. They are licensed by the department of family and social services and there are 6 homes with 6 boys in each home along with 2 staff members. At New Haven they teach life skills, i.e., how to budget, look for a place to live, apply for a job and many other things to help these young men be successful in life. They are committed to working with children who have been significantly affected by physical, sexual or emotional abuse. They provide a safe environment for these young men to restore their dignity and hope for a better life.

Diane talked about how most of these young men haven’t had the normal upbringing that a healthy home life can provide. At New Haven they are given that opportunity to a better life because they are taught that they matter and don’t have to accept the things that happened to them as their way of life. She showed a video that interviewed some of the boys and how New Haven has helped changed their lives. Diane also offered tours to anyone who would like to see this amazing organization first hand. Thank you Diane for your presentation and how New Haven is a beacon of hope for troubled young men in our community.
