Sunrise Rotary August 10, 2017; A Potpourri of Escondido Sunrise Rotary Accomplishments

  

President Dave called the meeting to order; Past President Alan Miller led the Pledge to our Flag, and Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation,

 

Guests and Visitors:

 

Past President Jim Ponder introduced representatives of the Pacific South Coast Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society; Rich Israel and Bob Coda

 

Ann Van Leer, Executive Director of the Escondido Creek Conservancy…

was a guest again… And soon to become a member; Welcome Ann!

 

Past President George Beitner introduced Parnia Vafaei, a RYLA alumni leader, was a guest; she shared some of her experiences both as a RYLA Attendee and as a RYLA Alumni Leader. She is a third year student at California Lutheran University (Past President Jack Anderson’s Alma Mater) and majoring in Business with a focus on entrepreneurialism…

 

Past President Kevin Svetich introduced his guest, Matt Pound of Escondido Sand and Gravel;  a Chamber of Commerce Board member and a Corporate Sponsor of the Grape Day 5K

 

Carl Altamore, a Realtor, was introduced as a guest; this is Carl’s second visit to our Club.

Hi-Fives and Announcements:

 

Past President Jeff Johnson brought some salmon for President Dave that he acquired by hook on a recent fishing trip in Alaska… 

 

Jeff also announced that his son, Brian was recently promoted to the rank of Captain, US Army… Congratulations to Brian and the proud family…

 

Past President Tony Criss recently traveled to Texas and North Carolina and brought some goodies for President Dave; some barbecue sauce and a “big butt” trinket…

 

Past President Rich Aeling announced some upcoming programs and events for Escondido Sunrise:

Our grant has been approved for “Bikes for Kids”… We’ll be raising some extra $$; the recipient school has not been determined…

 

Carols by Candlelight will again be a featured event around Christmas time…The group Lone Star will be the headliner…

 

The Tijuana House-Building project will take place in either January or February in partnership with the Escondido After-Five Rotary Club…

 

A Gulls Hockey night will take place on February 17…

 

Past President George Beitner commented on the ongoing opportunity to bring items for Fisher House at Camp Pendleton. A collection drive and delivery is planned for February…

 

Past President Barry Baker thanked Tony for his suggestion regarding the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach; Barry and Lee celebrated their anniversary at the venue…

 

Rich Israel from the Multiple Sclerosis Society thanked Sunrise members for our ongoing valuable support to the MS effort.  He spoke about local and international efforts to deal with the progressive aspects of the disease. Rich commented about the relationship of Multiple Sclerosis with Parkinson’s Disease and that progress in one arena often helps with treatments and therapies in the other. The Society’s efforts continue to support research and to provide those afflicted with support enabling them to accommodate the impacts of the disease.

    

Program:

 

Our program, The North County Veteran’s Stand Down will be presented at a later date… An apology was received from the presenter, Jim Hester of the Local VFW Chapter.
