Past President Mike Dunlap introduced our speaker, Jean Larson, the Executive Director of the Legacy Endowment Foundation. Mike serves on the Board of the Foundation… And Jean is a member of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club.

Jean spoke about the value of charitable organizations such as the Legacy Endowment Foundation; specifically, that charitable organizations provide support for needed community benefit programs so that government doesn’t have to provide for community needs. With that value, there are significant tax breaks for donors to foundations.

Jean Larson speaking to Sunrise Rotary Members…

Jean shared some facts about charitable organizations in America, and their value to their communities…

Jean also shared specific information about the role of the Boards of Directors of endowment foundations; such that they are responsible to ensure that donor wishes are fulfilled… She shared an example of a foundation established by Ben Franklin that was to provide scholarships for a period of 200 years… A Board’s responsibility is to ensure that funds are properly invested and then used for the purpose intended by the donor for the specified period of time.

Jean provided some specific information about the Legacy Endowment Foundation. Past President Mike shared that the Foundation is the vehicle supporting the ‘Cabins by the Lake’ project… The endowment for the Cabins by the Lake provides $30,000 per year for the various projects undertaken by the charity…
