Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

 

So, we met via Zoom… On October 29…  Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

 

President Chris opened the meeting… Even with a gavel and the familiar chime of a gavel striking a bell…  23 Sunrise Rotarians joined the Zoom meeting… Nice job all of you for joining us…

Past President Brian Murphy led our salute to our Nation’s Flag…

Sunrise Rotarians Serving, and Announcements: 

Youth Protection Certification

President Chris reminded all that Youth Protection Certification is required if you work with youth in any of our programs.

Past President Mike O’Malley oversees the certification and recently sent emails with the forms, procedure and all the details…

Escondido East Rotary Thanksgiving Dinner Delivery

President Chris announced that East Rotary is seeking drivers to deliver meals on Thanksgiving Day… Contact is with Darrol Castor of the East Club, contact President Chris to volunteer and connect with Darrol.

Rising Stars Program

Escondido Sunrise will be contributing $1,500 to this academic achievement awards program co-sponsored with the Chamber of Commerce

Bikes for Kids

The bike-build will take place on December 5 at Aelott Air Conditioning… Watch for details. Another opportunity to give to fulfill our commitment for the bikes; a $70 gift will fulfill the cost of a bike… Contact Past President Rich Aeling to commit your gift… The bikes will be presented to children at Camp Pendleton, coordinated with the YMCA…

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

At Major Market, November 28, December 5 and 12… Contact Secretary John Schwab to schedule your time on these dates.

 

Update your Rotary Calendar

President Chris shared some upcoming Rotary events… Mark your calendars.

President Chris added another event, involving the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Club and the San Diego Foundation, supporting the preparation of gift bags for sailors being quarantined prior to deployment onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Donations can also be made.

 

In addition to the above dates, President Chris shared that the Target gift shopping with youth from the Boys and Girls Club will be different this year with gift cards available to the kids rather than the face-to-face shopping adventure.

The final results are just about complete; some donations are still coming in…

 

321 participants joined our virtual event… And, $52,550 was reported on the Classy Website…

 

Past President Jim Ponder shared his thanks for all that worked to garner the contributions that fund much of our Club’s work throughout the year…

 

The winning team, by a very narrow margin, was the Kraken team, co-lead by Tina Pope and Dave Luevanos… The Kraken team total was $15,120 followed closely by the Dragon team with $14,850.… 

 

High Fives:

Past President Jim Ponder enjoyed some time at Mammoth with his son Garrett… Some snow accompanied their visit…

 

Past President Mark Hoekstra offered his thanks to the efforts of President Chris as this Rotary year is nearly half over and we’re still actively ‘meeting’ on line… Thank you Chris for all your effort!!

 

Program:

Our program this week were ‘Who Am I’ presentations by our newest members, Liz Phillips and Chris Leso…

Liz Phillips (soon to be Hawks) speaking to her fellow Escondido Sunrise members…

 

Liz is Escondido born and bred, currently living in Valley Center. She’s a “wine-drinking, gun-toting, hunter, and mom of her 11-year old son.”

 

Family is an important part of her life and she shared photos of her family members.

 

In her ‘big girl’ job, she is Director of Business Development for the Conrad Companies…

 

Liz joined Rotary, with some urging from her mom, Tina Pope, and also help make good things happen in our local community…

 

 

 

 

Chris Leso, speaking to his fellow Escondido Sunrise Rotarians…

 

Chris is also an Escondido Native, with post-secondary education at Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos. Chris began his work life with Titleist and Adidas golf companies… But found his interest growing to work in Law Enforcement.

 

He joined the Escondido Police Department 18 years ago, and has never looked back. He is currently the Traffic Sergeant, and has worked with Escondido Sunrise on our Grape Day 5K for a number of years. He also coordinates the Escondido PD Cadet program… Chris is also a hostage negotiator for the Police Department.

Chris and his bride have been married 22 years, and they have two children, one currently attending Arizona State University, and one in high school. Chris’s wife teaches kindergarten and first graders with a  focus on special education, working with students with autism.

Chris decided to become directly involved with Escondido Sunrise to share his heart to work within his community, and to enjoy the fellowship with other Rotarians.

 

A hearty Escondido Sunrise welcome to Liz and Chris!! We're all looking forward to serving our community with you both...

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…
