Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community in Person and via Zoom; and “5K Update and Fellowship Celebration” October 27, 2022
 
 
 
As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we seek new opportunities to serve…
 
 
 
 
We met again in person at the Chamber of Commerce… Great to enjoy the fellowship again and see all your smiling faces…
 
 
 
As a Club, we honored our nation with a salute to our Flag led by John Boyce and, an invocation was offered by Jack Anderson……

Al Owens who brought Bobbie Akins from the Escondido Police Dept. and Claire LeBeau who heads up the “Shop with a Cop program”
And of course, Chris Lesso (EPD) who hasn’t been able to attend because he is fearlessly protecting our city by working the graveyard shift. We look forward to having you back in January

Bunco Night highlights
Our first "fun outing" of the year was just that, a whole lot of fun. Thank you Rich and Donna for opening your home. The Padres game along with Bunco proved to be the perfect combo. Thank you Tina for the perfect illustration of "herding cats" trying to explain the rules of the game
 
 
 
High 5 and Announcements:
 
 
 
 
Rich Aeling announced that is mom Kitty had surgery last week and she is recovering very well. Praying for you Kitty that you are up and around very soon.
Rich also received a thank you to ESR for the donation of $2500 to the Palomar College Foundation athletic department.
 
Kendra talked about the Marines Christmas toy drive at Camp Pendleton. It is for all ages and toys can be donated by 12/10.
Kendra also has 2 recliners for anyone who needs them.
 
Barry Baker updated us about Olga and her son from Ukraine. Olga’s son was admitted to a special school in Point Loma where he is learning English and he is doing very well. The 24k tuition was generously covered. Olga has housing in Mission Beach and she is very grateful.

5K Update & Fellowship Celebration:
 
Jim Ponder gave us a detailed update on how we did this year with our annual fundraiser. It was a huge success!! He also went down memory lane and shared the different fundraisers that ESR has done:
 
There was a casino night, a duck race, a fun Oktoberfest, cribbage tournament, a pancake breakfast and an auction.
 
 
 
We finally began our journey with the Escondido 5K when Jim and Jeff Johnson while on a bike ride and bourbon afternoon came up with the idea. A huge thank you to you both for all you have done to make this so very successful!!

We  have been able to make donations to MS to  date in the amount of $190,000.
For this year’s event:
We raised $116,398
There were 935 participants and 97 Volunteers
We got to enjoy a recap video of the day, it was as always, a very special time.
 
 
Jim also brought champagne for everyone to toast to this incredible achievement
 
 
 
 
Chris Lesso introduced Claire LeBeau and Bobbie Akins who spoke about Shop with a Cop and what this event each year accomplishes. This event is hosted by the Escondido Police Department which will be held on December 3rd.  Over 300 3rd grade kids are selected to spend a day with a police officer Christmas shopping for their families and many other fun activities. They have $200 each to shop and give back. This special event truly helps the community with the kids spending time and seeing that police officers and good and helpful.
 
 
Ways to get involved:
There will be a fundraising BBQ on November 9th from 11am to 2pm at the Escondido Police and Fire Headquarters. There will be merchandise and other things for sale at the fundraiser.
They also asked for help with $200 per child from each elementary school in Escondido. Everyone in the room raised their hands to donate and a check was presented to the EPD in the amount of $2k which represented the ESR and After 5 Rotary clubs. Way to go Escondido Rotary clubs!!!!
 
 
 
 
 
Opportunity Drawing:
 
$608 in the pot and Mark Maus had the winner ticket this week but no such luck……. Mark Quick was the lucky winner with a $17 lunch
