Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community via Zoom; and “The Lighthouses in San Diego…” June 18, 2020

Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

So, we met via Zoom… On June 18…  Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

President Brian didn’t need a gavel or a bell… He brought the meeting to order with a his greetings and good wishes… And the comment that there will only be one more meeting under his ‘Reign’ as our President… Where did the time go???

Past President Mike O’Malley led the pledge to our nation’s Flag

President Brian proudly shared that his beloved bell had been stolen 5 times… Not an achievement to be taken lightly; he does want it back before he leaves his post as our esteemed President… “NOT!!”

A photo appeared of the bell, near death, facing a firing squad… Under Zoom guidelines, there was an appropriate warning for viewers…

President Brian was shocked by the depiction of the Bell facing certain danger… But, he just chuckled… He thinks it will be returned intact as his tenure comes to a close...

Program:

Our program this week was presented by Karen Scanlon on the ‘Lighthouses of San Diego’… Past President George Beitner introduced Karen.

Karen spoke about the six lighthouses in San Diego and described the historical work she and her twin sister Kim have undertaken as they have written and photographed the historical aspects of the lighthouses in San Diego, and have worked on the preservation of their history…

Karen showed many photos of the various lighthouses, and shared much about the major restoration of the Point Loma Light House.

This photo depicts an aerial view of Point Loma within which are located three of San Diego’s first lighthouses.

This photo shows the Point Loma Lighthouse and the interior of the interpretive museum that depicts the history of San Diego Lighthouses. Originally, the lights were the brilliant fresnel lenses, but have subsequently been replaced with an LED illuminating device. Also, mechanically, the lighthouses no longer need human keepers, and technology has replaced the role of lighthouse keepers.

There were/are three lighthouses on Point Loma proper, including one at Ballast Point at the entrance to San Diego Bay. The fourth lighthouse was part of the Pan Pacific Exhibition in Balboa Park in 1916; with that lighthouse as part of a facsimile of the Panama Canal, that lighthouse is now operating in Panama adjacent to the Canal. The fifth lighthouse is actually in Mexico, just south and west of Tijuana near the Plaza de Toros and serves as the first directional light as ships approach San Diego from the south. The sixth lighthouse is on the top of the Tom Ham's Lighthouse Restaurant on the Bay near Shelter Island.

A major restoration of the Point Loma Lighthouse was completed in early 2020 at a cost of $2 million. Much of the corrosion on the tower needed to be removed with structural elements rebuilt… These photos show the scaffolding in place as the tower was disassembled and restored.

This photo shows the Coast Guard personnel responsible for the lighthouse operation with the newer technology…

Rotarians Having Fun…

Past President George Beitner and Erin will be grandparents once again; their son Owen and his wife Mallory are expecting… Congratulations!!

Some Sunrise Rotarians were fishing in the Sierra’s, and a video was presented showing the landing of an amazing, 7 pound Rainbow Trout.

Once again, the Zoom warning appeared on the screen as apparently there was some language in the video that might be offensive…

And, wouldn’t you know it, it was Past President Mike O’Malley landing this beautiful fish, with the netting help of Past President John Boyce, aptly recorded by Past President Rich Aeling… And, being the former Sailor that he is , Mike let loose with some joyous expletives…

Keep your ‘fun’ photos coming to President Brian…
