Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community via Zoom; and “Sunrise Rotary Honors Rotary Service by Club Members…”  July 23, 2020

Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

So, we met via Zoom… On July 23…  Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

President Chris opened the meeting… Even with a gavel and a bell… Will wonders never cease?? 27 Sunrise Rotarians joined the Zoom meeting…

President Chris Miller led the pledge to our nation’s Flag…

Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation…

Sunrise Rotarians Serving, and Announcements:

Support for Neighborhood Healthcare:

Tina Pope announced the virtual gala, fundraising event for Neighborhood Health. We supported them with a number of actions including face shields and meals for frontline workers early on in the pandemic…

With the COVID gathering restrictions, their event this year will be virtual, and they are honoring Elmer Cameron, a longtime Board Member for Neighborhood Health as well as an actively engaged community member (Library Trustee, former City Council Member, Rotarian, etc.)…

Proceeds from the event will benefit NH clients that are facing gaps in their coverage due mainly to the COVID pandemic. Sunrise Rotary is contributing $500 and President Chris encouraged members to donate as well… You can have it added to your monthly charge bill, or donate directly at nhcare.org

District 5340 Council on Legislation:

Past President Brian Murphy shared that our club had voted on the District 5340 representative to the Rotary International Council on Legislation… Past District Governor, Mel Gallegos was our favored candidate.

Program:

President Chris filled our program time with some well-earned recognition for Sunrise Rotarians…

Since we are meeting virtually, President Chris and his right-hand assistant, First Daughter Samantha, delivered the awards personally to the honored members… Of course they observed proper social-distancing by ‘hanging’ the awards at the end of a 6-foot pole… and sticking out of the car window…

A new form of ‘drive-by’ interaction… A photo of those interactions needs to be secured for your demotion Chris!! Clearly a new phase of social intercourse!!

Rotary Foundation, Paul Harris awards were recognized for…

Kirk Henson, Second Award

Past President Kelly Mayberry, Sixth Award

Past President Tony Criss, Sixth Award

Past President Bob Burson, Eighth Award

Congratulations to all of you; and a hearty thank you for your generosity to Rotary’s impact around the globe…Their combined twenty-two Paul Harris awards equate to $22,000 working for Rotary good around the world!!

Honoring Women in Rotary…

President Chris, in recognizing achievement of Sunrise Club Members, called-out Past President Susan Maney for special accolades.

Susan was the first female President of our Club… We were still the ‘Escondido West’ Rotary Club… We hadn’t made the move yet to the breakfast ‘time zone’…

Congratulations Susan for your wonderful, ground-breaking leadership to The Escondido West/Sunrise Rotary Club!!! Susan is shown in this photo with Past President Kevin Svetich, receiving one of her Paul Harris Society Awards…

Rotarian of the Month:

President Chris acknowledged the continuing Rotary leadership of Past President Mike Dunlap. Mike has been effective as a leader locally with the ‘Cabins by the Lake’ Charity, through which Escondido Sunrise has spearheaded handicapped accessible camping cabins at Camp Pendleton and several County Parks, including Escondido’s own Lake Dixon…

Additionally, Mike has been instrumental in working with Global Grants through the Rotary Foundation… Mikes breadth of awareness of the needs globally and the ways in which grant funds can be gained and targeted toward areas of great need… Notably, Mike has worked with school projects in Nicaragua and grants for vocational training in Uganda, among other accomplishments.

Past President Mike in a candid moment at a Sunrise Club meeting…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
