Program:

The Escondido Library Literacy program presented to us this week. Past President Jack Anderson introduced Cynthia Chisum, President of the Board of the Friends of Literacy. She shared a bit about the program, and then introduced Sheila Rodriguez a staff member from the Library who heads the Literacy Program.

Sheila had much great information to share, but our visual program needed some help…

Pictured are President Brian and Liz Phillips, trying to get the Literacy visual program loaded for the presentation… Our apologies Sheila, but it did begin working…

The Literacy program serves all ages of participants; illiteracy is a challenge, as it is a national problem with about 20% of the country’s residents are not able to read and write. The Escondido program serves nearly 100 participants each year. All age groups are represented from those post school attendance. Much effort supports those that are working, but have difficulty with reading and improving their career opportunities due to illiteracy.

The Library program includes small group learning and one-to-one teaching as well. The small group classes are both for reading and writing. Many of the program participants are attempting to complete their GED requirements to gain a high school equivalency certificate…

Programs are also offered for entire families and parent workshops are offered as well. A goal of this aspect of the program is to engender reading in the home.

The Friends of Literacy conduct an annual ‘Scrabble-a-Thon’ to raise funds to support the literacy program. This year’s event will be on March 7 and provides opportunities to play and compete at various levels…
