Program

Sergeant at Arms, Gloria Lefler introduced our speaker, Cory Crowell representing the USS Midway Museum…

Cory’s background in aviation includes being introduced to flying at a young age while growing up in the Central Valley. He later used his aviation background as an Assistant Curator on the staff of the San Diego Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park. About 10 years ago, he began as a volunteer docent on the USS Midway Museum…

Cory Crowell speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Cory shared some information about the Aerospace Museum…

His work in restoring various aircraft, including a replica of Charles Lindbergh’s ‘Spirit of St Louis”…

He also briefly shared about the celebrity aviators that have graced the halls of the museum…

As Cory spoke about the USS Midway Museum, he commented that it is the most-visited tourist site in San Diego and the #8 most popular tourist site in the nation…

The Midway was launched in 1945, and saw her last military deployment in 1992 with Operation Desert Storm where she served as the flag ship for all Navy operations…

Midway was in dry dock in Bremerton Washington, when the green light was received to bring her to San Diego… Lots of governmental approvals to gain approval for her permanent berth at the Navy Pier on Harbor Drive.

Midway was towed from Bremerton at a cost of $1,000 per mile, all of those relocation funds being raised in advance… The Midway organization is financially sound, as they hold money in reserve for her ongoing maintenance, including a future dry dock visit to clean up her hull…

The Midway’s aircraft displays represent only those military aircraft that have flown from the Midway. Unlike many aviation museums that display all kinds of aircraft from all services… The Midway is a Navy Aviation Museum…

Midway is also an event venue; many military changes of command, a visit by the Viet Nam Memorial with a replica of the wall, and many community events including concerts and even a basketball game on the flight deck…

Guest, Mark Quick had the Lunch Money ticket for $21… Congratulations Mark!! Just enough for a ‘down payment’ on dues…

See you in person on July 15th…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
