Program

Past President, Jack Anderson introduced the program of the day, “Recycling in the Community,” and our speaker, Jim Ambroso, General Manager of Escondido Disposal. Jack commented that Escondido Sunrise is a community support partner for EDI’s Anaerobic Digester Project… And, that EDI has been an ongoing special sponsor of Sunrise Rotary’s Grape Day 5K Event for all 11 years of its existence…

Jim began his presentation by explaining the community impact of State Law on recycling, specifically SB1383 which places specific recycling requirements and timetables on cities throughout the state…

Jim Ambroso speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

The goal of SB1383 is to divert as much waste as possible from landfills…

Specific to Jim’s presentation was discussion regarding EDI’s anaerobic digester project which composts green waste and items related to food waste, with the resulting methane gas, processed to fuel EDI’s vehicle fleet… The anaerobic digester project is one of the very few in the State, and will enable EDI and parent company, EDCO to reduce the waste for Escondido, Poway, San Marcos, Vista, Encintas and surrounding County areas served by EDCO collection services…

Jim explained that the law is prescriptive, defining both the goals for reduction of the waste stream going into landfills, but also defining the penalties for communities and businesses that don’t comply with the law…

Much effort is being expended to work with food service organizations so that food can be reclaimed to support feeding programs in the County before the food spoils, and then to recycle and compost the food that would otherwise be disposed of…

Isabel Cervantes of EDI’s Community Relations Team was also in attendance and spoke about the ways EDI is working directly with customers to help them meet the requirements of the law…

Jim spoke about the effectiveness of the Anaerobic Digestion program and stated that the system accommodated 400 Tons Per Day of combustible waste in January of 2021… The system is a closed loop and manages to compost all of the waste, and convert the methane to usable fuel with a small amount of residue at the end of the processing…
