Program:

Past President Rich Aeling introduced SGT Chris Leso of the Escondido Police Department. Chris is the Traffic Sergeant, and has been instrumental in our planning for the Grape Day 5K running route through Downtown Escondido. SGT Leso also coordinates the Police Cadet program for which Sunrise Rotary has been a sponsor for the Cadet Annual Academy…Chris was recently serving as an acting Lieutenant…

SGT Chris Leso speaking to Sunrise Rotarians on our Zoom Line…

SGT Leso began his presentation with information on the Cadet Program. Serving youth from 15-21 years of age, the program provides training and support as they learn law enforcement skills, community leadership and character development programs.

There are currently about 20 young people in the program; many ‘graduate’ to law enforcement careers. 3 former cadets are currently Escondido PD Officers; 2 former cadets are in academy training for the San Diego PD; 2 cadets have become 911 emergency dispatchers, and 2 other former cadets are part time employees of the Police Department serving as Patrol Technicians, working in community policing and investigations.

SGT Leso spoke about the role of the Police Department relating to local enforcement and support of COVID-related programs. He commented that our Police Officers are supporting businesses as they deal with the virus, and do not directly enforce health rules, rather they coordinate with the County Health Department.

Chris commented that our PD did receive some reduction in budget funding this year, due to the economic impact of the pandemic, not related to issues in other cities to ‘de-fund’ police.

One of the concerns SGT Leso spoke about was the State of California’s program to release non-violent prison inmates back into communities… due mostly to COVID concerns. This action by the State has affected local communities through increase homeless population and increases in property crimes…

Club members had a few questions for Chris; and his presentation concluded with an announcement by Membership Chair, Joe Holtz, that SGT Leso is the newest member of Escondido Sunrise Rotary…

Welcome to our group, Chris!!

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
