Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community in Person and via Zoom; and “Interfaith Community Services; Finding New and Creative Ways to Serve Those in Need in our Community”… July 8, 2021

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we seek new opportunities to serve…

High Fives:

Feedback on Rotary’s Success Around the Globe from a Non-Rotary Source…

Past President, Jim Ponder was involved with a seminar in Paso Robles and met a participant in the program from India… As conversations go, the gentleman discovered that Jim was a Rotarian and commented on Rotary’s effectiveness with polio eradication in India. He then commented about the current challenges with the Covid virus, and that significant funds had been raised to help battle the disease, but no good plan in place for using the resources. Because of Rotary’s success with polio, Rotary became the go-to partner for implementing programs to help compact Covid…

Past President Jim Ponder sharing about his encounter with a Rotary supporter from across the globe…

A Reminder: Sunrise Rotary  Meetings Will Continue Each Week in Person…

Program

Past President, Chris Miller introduced our speaker from Interfaith Community Services…

Varinda Missett, Development Director for Interfaith has a long history in Escondido and the North County. A childhood neighbor to Susie Miller and Kathy Johnson, she previously worked in advertising with the Times Advocate… for non other than Past President Scott Putnicki (back in his hay day…)… Varinda was recently operating her own business in New York (pre-Covid) and relocated back to North County.  Her mother is a long-time volunteer at Interfaith and Varinda decided to do some good as a volunteer as well… Her experience and Interfaith’s challenging work, magnified by the pandemic, brought her to a paid leadership role with Interfaith…

Varinda Missett speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Sharing some statistics about service levels at Interfaith, Varinda spoke about the 250 faith communities that support Interfaith and that her development leadership role oversees the 2,300 plus volunteers that serve our fellow community members in need, along with fundraising for the important projects needed to sustain the service obligations of Interfaith…

Varinda spoke about the variety of service needs fulfilled by Interfaith, including, among others; housing for homeless residents at Haven House; Meal preparation including breakfast meals for homeless individuals; Clinical Behavioral Health included in Interfaith’s “wrap around services”; Employment support, in particular at their veteran’s center in Oceanside; Supportive services and recovery services from addiction.

Varinda spoke about the variety of partners that link together with Interfaith, including; Palomar Health and Neighborhood Health…

She focused on the latest major project that Interfaith is undertaking. The “Turk Recuperative Care Center” located near Washington and Centre City Parkway in Escondido… The facility is expected to cost $11 million, much of which is funded by a $6 million grant from San Diego County… The Turk family generously donated $1 million toward the project…

Varinda shared a video describing the services that will be available at the Turk Center including 77 rooms, some of which will support housing, and some recuperative care for those recovering from medical procedures.

Varinda also spoke about the volunteer opportunities at Interfaith continually needing willing, caring community members… Sunrise Rotary previously served dinner once monthly for the Veterans Program at Interfaith’s headquarters facility… And, we’re looking forward to re-engaging with such services…

Escondido Sunrise presented a check to Interfaith as Varinda concluded her presentation…

Pictured are Varinda, President Richard and Past President, Chris Miller…

The Bell has Been Returned!!

President Richard received an interesting package as part of the meeting… Marked with numerous waring labels… It cried out to be opened…

Inside, safely wrapped in shrink wrap, to avoid any Covid infection was the Escondido Sunrise Rotary Official Bell…

Now the challenge begins for the President to guard and protect the bell with his life throughout his reign as Sunrise Rotary President…

See you in person on July 15th…
