Program:

Past President George Beitner introduced our program speaker, Lauren Welch of the San Diego Urban Corps. Lauren was speaking to us from Monterrey as her husband is in the military… Lauren oversees marketing and grants for the San Diego Corps, and in the past year has been responsible for obtaining over $3 million in grants and contracts for the San Diego Corps.

The Urban Corps is part of the California Conservation Corps, with centers in major population areas throughout the state. The San Diego Corps Center is in Old Town San Diego, with a new North County Corps Center just opening in Escondido.

The Urban Corps serves young people from the ages of 18-26 and provides programs that include work skills development, english acquisition and encompasses a charter school for the educational programs.

Corps members attend school 1-2 days per week depending on their educational needs and goals, and work 2-4 days per week. Case management services are also offered to the youth depending on their needs.

Many of the work projects are undertaken with local government agencies and include environmental projects such as clean ups and tree planting along with recycling programs. Some work also involves construction as they work with Habitat for Humanity and will work on ‘weatherizing’ homes in economically challenged neighborhoods.

Corps projects for local agencies include payment by the contracting City or the County, and contract revenues support Corps operations and provide a wage for the Corps members…

The North County Corps Center is involved with many community projects...

Next Week’s Meeting:

Our program will be on the Escondido Police Department, presented by SGT Chris Leso…

The next meeting will be via Zoom on Thursday August 27…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
