Program

Past President, Jack Anderson introduced the program for the day… The Education Compact has been serving Escondido youth and families for 32 years…

Past President Jack has been a Compact Board Member since Compact was founded and he has served as Board Chair during his service tenure… Patty Huerta has served as Executive Director for 22 years, and has guided the staff towards their mission fulfillment as a “Unique and innovative organization designed to create and implement high quality programs and services for individuals to reach their fullest potential.”…

Compact exists to support youth and their families in such areas as prevention, intervention, and leadership development… All of Compact’s efforts focus on a healthy and safe community, enabling young people to complete their education while staying off of addictions…

Patty Huerta of the Education Compact, speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Patty shared that many trends that our region faces include the fact that incarceration doesn’t work fo youth… But, prevention and intervention does…

Compact works through tiers of success through community assessment, division and engagement with the youth and their families…

A recent successful program has been the Achievement Center functions working closely with the Probation Department and providing ‘re-entry’ opportunities for youth that have been incarcerated…

Patty asked the Rotarians present to pair up and think for a moment about the challenges our community’s youth have faced during the pandemic… Members shared concerns about isolation, anxiety, falling behind in school and similar outcomes of students being isolated from their normal avenues to achievement and success…

Past President, Jim Ponder shared the concerns identified by his group…

Compact works closely with both Escondido School Districts to better serve the youth; especially relative to opportunity and the economic disruption that families have experienced during the pandemic,,, Connecting with students and families by partnering with school staff have enabled continued building of success relationships, and providing predictability and consistency for the youth…

Compact was recently awarded a 5-year grant of $600,000 per year to join in a Community Assessment process to identify resources and provide individual support for youth and families in crisis…

Judy Fitzgerald shared her background, and information on dealing with challenged youth; specifically the need for diversion as incarceration leads to reduced self-value and recidivism…

One of Compact’s important challenges is the availability of space for programs and trainings to carry out the mission… Compact is in city-owned buildings, and is working with City staff for additional space next door to their current office on South Broadway…

Compact is always seeking volunteers to work as mentors with youth and to serve on ‘job-shadow’ projects and to speak about careers to high school youth… More information from Compact can be found at educationcompact.org

The consolation prize was $17… Past President, Brian also had this lucky number and gets to enjoy a lunch on Rotary…
